Overview

How stamp duty works in NT

In the Northern Territory, stamp duty on property is collected by the Territory Revenue Office and is calculated on the purchase price or market value. The NT does not offer a general first home buyer stamp duty concession, so most buyers pay duty at the standard rates. There is, however, a stamp duty exemption for eligible house and land packages under contracts signed up to 30 June 2027.

The big incentive for first home buyers is the HomeGrown Territory Grant. Eligible first home buyers can receive $50,000 to buy or build a new home, with no cap on the price, for contracts signed between 1 October 2024 and 30 September 2027. Existing home owners may qualify for a $30,000 FreshStart New Home Grant. A specialist broker from our partner network can help you make the most of these.
