Worth knowing

Van finance for couriers, trades and mobile businesses

Lenders look at where your income comes from, your ABN history and how specialised the fit-out is. Standard vans are generally easier to finance; your broker asks about the build early to find a comfortable lender.

Read the full explanation

Vans tend to be financed for a clear earning purpose, and lenders look at that purpose. A contract courier with a steady run, a plumber with a racked-out service van and a mobile dog groomer with a custom build all present differently. Lenders usually want to understand where the income comes from, how long you have held your ABN and whether the van has specialist fit-out that may affect resale value. Standard panel vans are generally easier to finance than heavily customised units.

Fit-out is often a large share of the cost. Shelving, refrigeration, partitions, ladder racks and signage may be included if they are part of the purchase. Converted vans used as food trucks or mobile workshops can be financed too, but some lenders treat the conversion as equipment rather than vehicle, which can change the structure. Your broker will ask about the build early, so the application goes to a lender that is comfortable with your van type.

Costs and fees to compare

The interest rate is only part of the cost. Ask your broker to show these side by side.

Interest

Set by the lender; depends on van age, build and business history.

Fit-out costs

Racking, refrigeration and partitions bought with the van are financed across the term.

Fees

Expect an establishment fee and possibly a monthly fee.

Balloon

Can reduce repayments; useful for high-kilometre vans you’ll replace.

Insurance

Most lenders need comprehensive cover, including fitted equipment, before settlement.

FAQs

Van finance: common questions

Can I finance a van as a contract driver?

Yes. Many lenders work with contract couriers. Evidence of your contract and income will help.

Is refrigeration included?

If it is installed at purchase and on the invoice, many lenders will include it.

Lease or chattel mortgage?

A lease means the lender owns the van while you use it. A chattel mortgage means you own it from day one. The right choice depends on your tax position, so check with your accountant.

Can I finance a used van?

Yes. Most lenders finance used vans, subject to age and condition.

Can I finance a food truck van conversion?

Some lenders will finance a food truck, either as a vehicle with fit-out or with the kitchen equipment financed separately. It often depends on who did the build and whether it is certified. Your broker can check which approach the lender prefers.

How many kilometres is too many for a used van?

There is no single limit. Each lender has its own policy on age and kilometres, and some consider the van's condition and service history. Your broker can tell you which lenders are more flexible on higher-kilometre vans.

Can I finance a van if I'm new to courier work?

Possibly. Some lenders work with new contract drivers, especially if you have a signed contract or relevant work history. A deposit or a guarantor may help in some cases, depending on the lender.
