Financing a ute and its fit-out: what lenders look at
Fit-out can often be financed if it’s invoiced and fitted by settlement; later add-ons usually need separate funding. How you use the ute shapes the structure, so being clear upfront helps your broker approach the right lender first.
Read the full explanation
Most lenders are happy to finance a ute, but the fit-out is where the detail matters. Trays, canopies, drawer systems, roof racks, bull bars and towbars can often be included if they are on the dealer or fitter's invoice and fitted before or at settlement. Aftermarket work done months later usually needs separate funding. Some lenders cap how much of the total can be accessories relative to the base vehicle, so a heavily modified ute may need a lender with a more flexible policy.
Your broker will also look at how the ute is used. A tradie using it almost entirely for work can usually access business finance like a chattel mortgage, while a dual cab that doubles as the family car may suit a different structure. Lenders also consider the age and kilometres of used utes, particularly popular four-wheel-drive models that hold value well. Being clear about use and fit-out from the start helps your broker approach the right lender first.

Ute finance: common questions
Can I include the canopy and toolboxes?
Often, yes, when they are fitted at the time of purchase and included on the dealer invoice. Your broker will confirm with the lender.
I am a sole trader: can I still get business finance?
Yes. Sole traders with an ABN can access business finance structures like a chattel mortgage.
What if my ABN is new?
Some lenders will consider newer ABNs, especially if you have worked in the trade for a few years. A deposit may help.
Can I buy a ute privately?
Yes. We check the PPSR and pay the seller directly.
Can I finance a ute with a tray conversion?
Often yes, if the tray conversion is done by the dealer or an established fitter and included on the purchase invoice. Some lenders will ask for an engineering certificate where the conversion changes the vehicle's specs. Your broker can check this with the lender before you order.
Is a dual cab ute a business or personal purchase?
It depends on how you use it. If it is mainly a work vehicle for your business, business finance is usually appropriate, but if it is mostly for family use a personal loan may fit better. Your accountant can advise on any tax treatment.
Do I need a deposit for ute finance?
Not always. Some lenders will finance the full purchase price for established businesses, while others may ask for a deposit or trade-in for newer ABNs or older vehicles. It depends on the lender and your profile.
